Rivotril is a medication used to treat epilepsy in infants, children, and adults. It can be used to treat seizures and fits as well. Rivotril is also known as clonazepam. It belongs to the medical group known as benzodiazepines.

In what dosage should Rivotril be taken?

It comes in .5mg and 2mg tablets. 0.5 mg tablet is light orange in color and cylindrical in shape. It has ‘0.5’ carved on one side. The 2mg tablet is white in color and cylindrical in shape. It has ‘2’ carved on one side. The dosage of Rivotril varies from person to person as it depends on your age, gender, and medical condition. The initial dosage of Rivotril for adults should not be over 1.5mg / day, divided into three doses. Depending on your medical condition the dose can go up to 8 to 10mg per day. Do not increase it on your own but do so only when your doctor prescribes you to. For children under the age of 10, the dose depends on their weight. It varies from 0.01mg/ kilogram of body weight to 0.03mg/ kilogram of body weight divided into two or three doses. It should not exceed 0.05mg of Rivotril per kilogram of body weight a day. The doctor may vary doses to control the seizures of the child.

How to store Rivotril and what to do if a dose is skipped?

If you miss a dose then take it when you remember, skip the dose if it is almost time for your second dose. Under no circumstances should you ever take double doses to make up for the missed dose. If you are still unsure about what to do then contact and ask your doctor. Rivotril should be stored at room temperature and in a dry place. This means that it should not be kept in a washroom. Keep this medication away from direct heat and light. Rivotril tablets should be swallowed with water. The injection should be prepared by a doctor or a nurse. Operating heavy machinery or driving should be avoided when using Rivotril as these activities need alertness. So not stop using Rivotril abruptly. Do not use this medication for a very long time and do not share it with others just because you think they have the same condition as you. Once you stop consuming this medicine you may have to go through withdrawal symptoms such as dizziness, rapid heart rate, blood pressure fluctuations, seizures, irritability, nausea, tremor, confusion, psychosis, and hallucinations. If you used to take this medication in high doses then obviously the withdrawal symptoms would be intense for you.

What are some of the side effects caused by Rivotril?

Although Rivotril helps many with epilepsy, however, it does have quite a few side effects. Some side effects of this medicine include dizziness, drowsiness, tiredness, confusion, headache, constipation, abdominal cramps, joint pain
lack of concentration, loss of memory, slurred speech, palpations, unsteadiness, blurry vision, increased heart rate, tremor, weakness in muscles, and vomiting. Some serious side effects of this medication include difficulty in breathing, severe anxiety, hallucinations, and delusions. If this happens then contact your doctor immediately. It is not common but if you observe shortness of breath, rashes, hives, itching on the skin, difficulty breathing, swelling of face, tongue, eyes, lips, or other parts then that means you are having a severe allergic reaction ton Rivotril and you need to medical assistance immediately. Old people should avoid using the medication as it makes you dizzy and they are already weak and prone to falling.

Who should avoid using Rivotril?

If you have had an allergic reaction to any other benzodiazepines such as lorazepam, oxazepam, diazepam, etc. then avoid using Rivotril. If you suffer from closed or acute glaucoma then you should not use this medicine. Rivotril is not suitable for you if you have severe breathing problems, schizophrenia, high or low blood pressure, chronic lung disease, kidney problem, liver

problem, or sleep apnea. Some medications might cause a reaction if taken with Rivotril. So avoid using Rivotril simultaneously with sleeping pills, tranquilizers, muscle relaxants, pain killers, antidepressants, medicine for ulcer, medicine for alcohol abuse, medicine for cold and other medications for treating seizures. People who have a history of substance abuse should abstain from using Rivotril as it is addictive. If you are pregnant or if you plan to become pregnant then talk to your doctor before starting Rivotril as it may have negative effects on the unborn. If you are a breastfeeding mother then avoid using Rivotril or at least consult your doctor before starting the treatment as it may pass down through breastmilk.
